nonna’s grocer

Known for their range of playful candles which take the form of fresh produce, Nonna’s Grocer is a concept design studio founded by Madeleine Hoy. The studio draws inspiration from Madeleine’s grandparents who migrated from Sicily to Daylesford, Victoria and who opened a fruit shop in the 1930’s.

Following the success of the range of produce candles, Nonna’s Grocer has expanded their range to include combs, just as their Nonna’s use. Made from collected plastic and moulded by Defy Design in Sydney.

Working with Nonna’s Grocer, we created the structural design of the comb packaging across the two styles combs, the Guiseppe and the Francis.

What we did

Structural Design
Production & Manufacturing

The structural process included several rounds of prototyping. The perforations required some refinement to ensure the tears strips work across the two boxes. The larger Francis comb utilised a crocodile tear, whereas the smaller curved Guiseppe comb uses morse code inspired perforation to ensure a successful opening experience.

The packaging reveals a message on the inside of the box about the manufacturing process of using recycled plastics.

The plastic used to make this come has been on a journey: Diverted from Landfill > Sorted > Cleaned >
Shredded > Melted > Injected > Hand Finished > and into your palm where it belongs.
